Bored. Bored, bored, bored. And I just got a student loan check (which I should Spend Responsibly, of course).

So! I'm asking for song suggestions, and maybe I'll go on an iTunes spree. I've been trying to think of my favorite artists, but I've decided to go with my Most Played instead. Behind the cut are some of my favorite songs, to give you an idea of my taste. Got a song you think I'd like? Let me know! Think my taste sucks? Uh... well, you could tell me, but really, what's it going to accomplish?

(Oh, and pardon my crappy icon-making skillz. I mean, I have this outrageous amount of space for them, and only MSPaint and a complete lack of natural ability to fill it with!)

(Because I'm a sucker for these things.) Fire up your MP3 or other player, put it on 'shuffle' and show what ten songs came up first.

1. Santa Monica - Everclear
2. Gigantor - Helmet
3. Snakedriver - The Jesus and Mary Chain
4. I Wanna Be With You - The Sneetches with Shoes
5. Bell Bottomed Tear - The Beautiful South
6. Swingin' from your Crystal Chandelier - Austin Lounge Lizards
7. Carry Me Away - Concrete Blonde
8. From Where I Am [Instrumental] - Enya
9. Dust in the Wind - Sarah Brightman
10. Horse Tears - Goldfrapp

Interestingly (to me, anyway), the first four items on this list are either from soundtracks (the Crow, Saturday Morning Cartoons) or mix CDs given to me by other people ([livejournal.com profile] pyrric, [livejournal.com profile] theodosia). And then there's the Sarah Brightman album, most of which I hate with the fury of at least a dozen red-hot fiery suns but haven't gotten around to deleting yet.

Unexpectedly tagged by [livejournal.com profile] denonymous with a music meme!

"list five songs that you are currently digging. it doesn't matter what
genre they are from, whether they have words, or even if they're any
good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. post
these instructions, the artist, and the song in your journal, then tag
five other people to see what they're listening to."

Hmm. Excellent question. This is particularly hard because what I've mostly been doing is going through trying to rate all my songs. This sounds dumb, but it actually means I'm getting to hear all of them, particularly the ones I'm not very familiar with (and therefore can't just rate by looking at the title). Thus all the songs on my Most Played list are ones that I don't know very well (or keep not remembering which ones they are) so I have to listen to them several times before I can rate them. Still, I'll give it a shot. Not to be outdone, however, mine goes to six as well:

1. Annie Lennox - Cold
2. Poe - Spanish Doll
3. June Tabor and The Oyster Band - All Tomorrow's Parties
4. S.A.L.T. by the Orb.
5. Lamb - Softly
6. Haysi Fantayzee - Shiny Shiny

Notes on the music: )

Extra-bonus piece: Giles's song from the Buffy episode "Restless". I used this piece to test my homework in a Windows programming class years ago. "Strange, it's not like anything we've faced before..."

I know people are tired of tagging, but hey -- I never got tagged before! So (trying to pick people I think might actually read this), how about [livejournal.com profile] vwbug, [livejournal.com profile] shayheyred,[livejournal.com profile] noradeirdre, [livejournal.com profile] the_leewit, and [livejournal.com profile] pyrric? Only if you want, obviously.

And now, back to trigonometry.

To do a lyrics quiz. Yay! Lyrics! )
helvirago: (Legs)
Coming up, the answers to the unguessed lyrics from the quiz. Some thoughts spurred by writing this entry:
  • Am I the only person who listens to Dido? I keep feeling that there's something, I don't know, relentlessly middlebrow about liking her, as though I should be embarrassed about it. But I have no idea where that feeling's coming from! Anyway, I just go on liking her a lot.
  • My French kind of really sucks. Despite my listening to the Les Miz soundtrack a silly number of times. Seriously, I don't understand any of it -- but I do wonder why on earth the French version has "My prince is already on the way" and the English version has "There is a castle on a cloud." Huh? Never liked that song, anyway. At least the castle on a cloud version. I mean, among other things, the line about crying not being allowed irritated me, because I imagine the Javerts Thenardiers (Javerts, psha. What's wrong with me?) looked pretty harshly on crying too! I, um, may have thought about it too much. It's funny, I think I have some of the same issues with Cosette as with Harry Potter, in that their childhoods were supposed to be entirely dominated by these people who essentially hate and (at least emotionally) abuse them, but it doesn't have all that much impact on their personalities. Okay, really overthinking it.
  • Apparently, the phrase "open palmed" appears in a fair number of sex-related sites -- Kama Sutra and erotica. I guess it doesn't come up all that much, but where it does come up it's often in the context of caresses -- or, in the case of the Kama Sutra, slaps, but in the context "kissing and slapping between her breasts", which sounds not particularly erotic, but hey. Kama Sutra.
  • I overthink stuff a lot.

    Ooh! "William's Doll"!
